Translation and comment: El Arqueólogo

Translation and comment: El Arqueólogo

Postby Heidita » Fri May 12, 2017 6:50 am

I read this very interesting column by Rosa Belmonte this morning and was thinking it would be a great exercise.

I would like you to answer some questions and translate the extract.

the whole column here.

All this is happening about an uproar about a comment made by Joanna Lumley :

Idris Elba should not play James Bond as he doesn't fit description

Questions:

Do you think people are taking this too far to think about "racism" here?
Would you like to see a black man in the role of James Bond?
Had you heard about this comment, do you think it is reasonable?

Ok, here is the text...I think it is very interesting , hope you like it :)

I think the last sentence is hilarious  ...and I do think she is quite right. Have a go at answering the question in Spanish, if you wish.
I appreciate all English corrections, especially on style! :)

ImageIdris Elba

Why not? They don't mind changing Bond's personality to fit the plot. In one movie he is young and vital (Craig in Casino Royale...great foot chase scene) and in another he is aging and showing wear and tear. (Daniel Craig in Skyfall). In one movie he gets married (On her Majesty's Secret Service) and in others he is the single, inveterate lady chaser (most of the remaining movies). If they are going to give him an alternating personality, why not change his skin color? (Latest advancement in disguises from Q). If they can make a car invisible (Tomorrow Never Dies), why can't they change the appearance of skin color?

I'll just start the translation so everyone gets to work on it.

James Bond isn't black. Just as Pippi Longstocking isn't. The actress Joanna Lumley (our fabulous Patsy Stone) has said that she doesn't see Idris Elba playing the role because he doesn't follow the character described in Ian Fleming's books. Must we spell it out? Is there really anyone to whom it seems racist?....

As for my comment in Spanish:
¿Cómo no?

(What does any of this have to do with archeology?)

I don't agree, the next we know is that snow-white is black, too. Or Otelo, white.

¿Como así?

And I would not use a character from a Shakespearean play (Otelo) as an example, since the theater traditionally used men to play the role of women. Talk about character revisions!
